Italian startup Pillar has secured fresh capital to accelerate its plan to digitise one of the world’s most traditional sectors: construction. The company is developing an AI-driven operating system that connects financial data, project operations, and site activity in a single platform for contractors.

The seed round strengthens Pillar’s balance sheet and positions the company to scale both in its home market and across Europe, as construction firms face mounting pressure to control costs, improve cash flow visibility, and modernise back-office processes.

Seed round brings total funding to €15.2 million

Pillar has closed a €12 million seed funding round led by Earlybird Venture Capital and Base10 Partners, with participation from Italian Founders Fund. The latest raise lifts the company’s total funding to €15.2 million, achieved in under eight months since its public launch.

Existing investor Emblem and other backers supported earlier financing rounds, helping the company move from concept to market-ready product in a short period. Founded in 2025, Pillar is one of a growing group of European construction technology firms targeting productivity and financial transparency in the sector.

AI-powered platform for construction operations and finance

Pillar is building a software platform intended to function as an operating system for contractors. The solution automates a wide range of administrative and back-office workflows that typically consume time and generate financial risk for construction businesses.

The platform uses artificial intelligence to support tasks such as:

  • Preparing and managing project quotes
  • Tracking margins and profitability while work is in progress
  • Coordinating workforce deployment and labour costs
  • Producing operational and financial reports during the project lifecycle

By combining financial and operational data, the company aims to give contractors real-time insight into project performance, cash needs, and potential cost overruns, without adding extra manual work.

Tackling one of the least digitised major industries

Construction remains one of the largest sectors of the global economy but also among the least digitised. Many firms still depend on manual spreadsheets, paper-based processes, and disconnected tools for scheduling, accounting, and on-site coordination.

Pillar’s platform is designed to overlay existing workflows rather than replace them entirely. It pulls information from accounting systems, bank feeds, and construction sites, even incorporating updates and messages sent over tools like WhatsApp, into a single dashboard.

According to CEO and co-founder Gabriel Guinea Montalvo, the company sees construction as one of the last major industries yet to undergo a fundamental technology upgrade. He describes project data as typically fragmented and opaque, from the back office to the job site, and argues that the sector needs a standard operating layer to bring order and transparency.

Expansion plans and new product modules

The newly raised seed capital will be deployed to consolidate Pillar’s presence in Italy, support hiring, and prepare for entry into other European markets. The company is targeting contractors that need tighter command over project economics, payments, and workforce allocation.

On the product side, Pillar plans to broaden its platform with additional modules that will address more stages of the construction value chain, including:

  • Procurement and purchasing management
  • Tender and bid management
  • Subcontractor coordination and oversight
  • Banking integrations and related financial services

By extending these features, Pillar aims to cover not only project execution but also upstream planning and downstream payment flows, helping firms to manage budgets, financing, and contractor relationships more efficiently.

Long-term goal: a central operating layer for construction

Pillar’s long-term ambition is to become a central operating platform for the construction industry. The company envisions its software as a core system through which contractors manage projects, payments, and workforce operations across their portfolios.

If successful, such a system could influence how construction companies handle cash flow forecasting, bank relationships, procurement strategies, and margin protection. For investors, the bet is that the combination of AI, financial data integration, and industry-specific workflows can unlock a large addressable market in Italy, across Europe, and in other regions where construction operations remain largely manual and fragmented.
